Dumfries Annan Road Sinkhole Halves Noblehill Cafe Trade, Scottish Water Repairs Continue
A sinkhole that appeared on Dumfries' Annan Road over a week ago has significantly disrupted local commerce, with proprietor Rudi Miroli of the Noblehill Cafe reporting a 50% reduction in trade. The Annan Road, a primary access route to and from the town's bypass, has been closed since 28 May, when Scottish Water initiated emergency repairs.
Scottish Water confirmed that a void opened beneath the carriageway, affecting a sewer located about 4m (13ft) underground. The extensive nature of the repair work requires the full width of the road for safe operation. While footpaths remain open and diversions are in place, the complete road closure has drastically reduced passing trade for businesses like the Noblehill Cafe, situated adjacent to the affected area.
Mr Miroli expressed considerable frustration over the lack of definitive information regarding the repair timeline. He stated that workers on site indicated a potential three-week repair period, possibly longer, for the deep-seated sewer damage. This uncertainty complicates operational planning, including stock orders, and raises concerns about the business's immediate future. Scottish Water, through its contractor Clancy, has acknowledged the road's importance and pledged to minimise disruption, though it remains unable to provide a precise completion date until the damaged sewer is fully exposed and assessed.
