First Minister John Swinney Backs Transport Secretary Flynn Amid Ferry Gas Leak Controversy
First Minister John Swinney has publicly endorsed Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop, asserting his full confidence in her leadership, even as her deputy, Kevin Stewart, faces scrutiny regarding a ferry gas leak. Swinney's backing comes after Stewart, the Minister for Transport, denied receiving a briefing about the incident on the MV Alfred in May, a stance contradicted by official documentation.
Stewart maintained his lack of prior knowledge about the gas leak aboard the CalMac ferry, which led to the vessel's withdrawal from service. However, it emerged that he was indeed included in a briefing note concerning the issue, casting doubt on his initial assertion. The First Minister acknowledged that "nobody's perfect" when questioned about the discrepancy, a response that has drawn criticism from opposition parties.
The MV Alfred, a leased vessel, was removed from its Stornoway to Ullapool route shortly after the incident, necessitating its repair. The controversy underscores ongoing challenges within Scotland's ferry network, a public service often criticised for its operational reliability and financial oversight. Critics point to a pattern of accountability issues within the Scottish government's handling of transport matters, particularly concerning the publicly owned ferry operator and its ageing fleet.
