First Minister Michelle O'Neill Refuses Resignation Demand Over Drumcree Parade Stance
First Minister Michelle O'Neill has dismissed demands for her resignation from unionist politicians, who criticised her attendance at a demonstration in Drumcree, County Armagh. The protest opposed a loyalist parade, an annual event at the centre of long-standing contention.
During a session in the Stormont Assembly, Ms O'Neill stated she was "proud" to align with the residents and vowed to "continue to stand with them". The DUP's Jonathan Buckley had challenged her position, arguing her presence at the demonstration was incompatible with her role as First Minister for all citizens.
The annual Orange Order parade at Drumcree church has been a flashpoint for decades. Since 1998, the Parades Commission has prohibited the Orange Order from marching through the Garvaghy Road, a predominantly nationalist area, citing public order concerns. This restriction followed years of violent confrontations.
Ms O'Neill's involvement in the recent protest underscores the enduring divisions surrounding parading rights in Northern Ireland. Her refusal to step down signals a continued assertion of her party's traditional alignment, despite holding a cross-community leadership position.
