Former Chihuahua State Prosecutor César Jáuregui Moreno Charged with Treason Over US Drug Raid
César Jáuregui Moreno, previously the state prosecutor for Chihuahua, Mexico, has been formally charged with treason following his alleged authorisation of US agents to join a drug raid earlier this year. The Attorney General's Office confirmed the charges, asserting that Mr Jáuregui Moreno's actions constituted an infringement on national sovereignty.
The accusation centres on an incident in April where US personnel reportedly participated in a raid on a suspected narcotics facility within Mexican territory. Mexican law strictly prohibits foreign agents from involvement in such operations, a principle intended to uphold the nation's independent jurisdiction and control over its internal security matters.
The Attorney General's office has stated that the former prosecutor's decision to allow foreign engagement in the raid directly contravened established legal frameworks. This move underscores a persistent tension regarding cross-border law enforcement collaboration and the precise boundaries of international cooperation, particularly concerning the involvement of US agencies in Mexico's domestic security apparatus, often framed by Washington as 'counter-narcotics' efforts.
