Former Virginia Deputy Governor in Apparent Murder-Suicide
Tragic Incident Unfolds
Former Virginia Deputy Governor Justin Fairfax and his wife, Cerina Fairfax, were discovered deceased at their Annandale residence early on Thursday morning in what police are treating as a murder-suicide. Authorities report that Mr Fairfax shot his wife multiple times before taking his own life. The couple's two teenage children were at home at the time of the incident, prompting an emergency call to police shortly after midnight local time (05:00 GMT).
Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis indicated that the tragedy appears to be rooted in ongoing domestic disputes surrounding a 'complicated or messy divorce', despite the couple still residing together but being separated. Investigators found bullet casings near Mrs Fairfax's body, suggesting a rapid and spontaneous sequence of events.
A Fall from Grace
Justin Fairfax, a significant figure as the second black person elected to statewide office in Virginia, served as Deputy Governor from 2018 to 2022. His tenure was notably overshadowed by two sexual assault allegations, which he consistently denied. He unsuccessfully sought the governorship in 2021.
Chief Davis lamented the situation as a 'fall from grace for a relatively high-profile family', expressing particular sorrow for the children who have lost both parents under such tragic circumstances. Political figures, including former Governor Ralph Northam, have conveyed their shock and offered condolences to the family, highlighting the personal tragedy that has unfolded.
