Fort Hood Survivor Alonzo Lunsford Backs Nidal Hasan Firing Squad Execution
Alonzo Lunsford, who sustained seven gunshot wounds during the 2009 Fort Hood massacre, has voiced his support for the execution of former US Army Major Nidal Hasan by firing squad. Hasan, responsible for the deaths of 13 people and injuries to over 30 others, was sentenced to death in 2013. The state of Texas is now seeking to carry out this sentence.
Public Viewing Concerns
While endorsing the form of punishment, Lunsford expressed reservations regarding proposals to livestream Hasan's execution. He questioned the potential psychological impact on viewers and whether such an event should be publicly accessible, despite acknowledging the gravity of Hasan's crimes.
Hasan's lawyers have lodged appeals to prevent the execution, arguing that a change in Texas law is required before a firing squad can be legally assembled. The legal challenges reflect ongoing debates surrounding capital punishment methods in the United States.
The Fort Hood shooting remains one of the deadliest incidents on a US military base, prompting extensive review of security protocols and military justice procedures.
