Four Critically Injured in Head-On Train Collision Near Kagerup, Denmark, Thursday
Four individuals are critically injured and thirteen others required hospital treatment following a head-on train collision north-west of Copenhagen on Thursday. The incident took place on a level crossing along the line linking the towns of Hillerød and Kagerup in Denmark's North Zealand region.
Tim Ole Simonsen of the Greater Copenhagen fire department confirmed that all injured parties were transported to hospital by air or ambulance. The Frederiksborg Fire and Rescue service was alerted to the accident at approximately 06:30 local time (05:30 BST).
Local mayor Trine Egetved of Gribskov municipality stated that those with critical injuries were flown to the National Hospital in Copenhagen. Images broadcast by the national public broadcaster showed two yellow and grey trains with significant frontal damage, facing each other in a wooded area.
While the cause remains under investigation, an expert has suggested one train driver may have overridden a stop signal upon departing a local station, leading to entry onto the incorrect line. The Gribskov line is reportedly not equipped with an automated safety system.
