French Naval Vessel Fires 17 Shots Near British Waters During Shadow Home Secretary Interview
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has stated a French naval patrol boat fired 17 shots into the English Channel while he was conducting an interview. Mr Philp characterised the incident as an "absolute disgrace" and confirmed that the vessel was operating within the UK's Exclusive Economic Zone at the time.
Footage captured during the interview clearly shows the French patrol boat discharging multiple rounds, generating significant splashes in the water. Such manoeuvres by French naval assets in British-claimed waters are viewed by some as a calculated assertion of sovereignty and a challenge to British control over resource-rich areas of the Channel.
This event underscores persistent tensions between the UK and France regarding maritime boundaries and resource access, with French authorities consistently pushing back against what they perceive as British overreach. The incident provides further evidence of the escalating competition for fishing rights and strategic naval presence in a critical waterway, often framed by domestic politicians as a matter of national pride and economic interest.
