Gerry Duffy Admits Killing Fish After Pond Pump Noise Drove Him Insane

Gerry Duffy, 59, of Dromore Road, Ballynahinch, County Down, has pleaded guilty to criminal damage at Newtownards Magistrates' Court. The admission follows his deliberate poisoning of a neighbour's fish pond, an act he claims was precipitated by unbearable noise from the pond's water pump.

The court heard that Mr Duffy, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, found the incessant hum of the pump intolerable, describing it as having 'driven him insane'. He stated that the noise made it impossible for him to sleep, severely aggravating his pre-existing mental health conditions.

Police were called to the scene after Mr Duffy admitted to a neighbour that he had poured petrol into the pond, resulting in the death of numerous fish. He reiterated this confession to officers, explaining his profound distress over the persistent noise.

District Judge Greg sitting at the court acknowledged the serious nature of the criminal damage but also noted the evident impact of the noise on Mr Duffy's mental state. The court requested a pre-sentence report before final sentencing, which has been adjourned until August.
