Government Expands Police Protection for Local Councillors and Political Activists
The UK government has expanded the remit of police support available to political figures beyond Members of Parliament, now including local councillors and other individuals prominent in public life. This policy shift addresses what Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood described as "insufficient protection" for those facing threats and harassment for their public roles.
Previously, enhanced police support was largely concentrated on MPs. However, the revised guidance acknowledges a growing incidence of intimidation and direct threats targeting a wider spectrum of political actors, from local government representatives to community organisers and activists. The move signals an official recognition that the landscape of political engagement has become increasingly fraught with personal risk.
While specific details of the expanded support remain under review, it is understood to encompass measures ranging from enhanced personal security assessments to direct police intervention and advice on managing public appearances. This adjustment aims to bolster the resilience of democratic processes against attempts to silence or intimidate public servants and politically active citizens, ensuring a more uniform standard of protection across the political spectrum.
