Green Party Names Chris Kennedy, Registered Nurse, Makerfield By-Election Candidate
The Green Party has confirmed Chris Kennedy, a registered nurse and children's safeguarding specialist, as its candidate for the upcoming Makerfield by-election. Kennedy, who resides locally and grew up in nearby Leigh, was selected by party members following a hustings event.
The by-election, scheduled for 18 June, was necessitated by the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons. Simons stated his intention to step down was to allow Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham the opportunity to seek the seat and potentially return to Parliament.
Green Party leader Zack Polanski commented on Kennedy's selection, stating, "Chris will be a fantastic candidate and representative for Makerfield. This election is about who is making the case for lower bills, warmer and more affordable homes, and a greener and fairer economy."
Five other political parties have also announced their candidates for the Makerfield contest.
