Hong Kong Authorities Withdraw AI-Generated K-Pop Anti-Drug Video After Public Backlash
Hong Kong’s Correctional Services Department has withdrawn an animated K-pop style video designed to discourage drug use, after the public condemned its potentially counterproductive messaging. The video, featuring AI-generated characters, was intended as part of an anti-drug campaign but instead drew criticism for making the prohibited substances look enticing.
The department initially released the video as a public service announcement, aiming to engage a younger audience through the popular K-pop aesthetic. However, viewers quickly pointed out that the portrayal of drug use, albeit in an animated context, could be interpreted as glamourising the act rather than condemning it.
Following a significant public backlash, the Correctional Services Department removed the video from its platforms. This incident highlights the challenges organisations face when attempting to leverage new technologies like AI for public health campaigns, particularly in navigating cultural nuances and ensuring the intended message is effectively conveyed without unintended consequences.
