Huel Advertisement Barred Over Implied Total Food Replacement Nutritional Claim
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has prohibited a television advertisement for Huel, the meal replacement brand. The ruling follows concerns that the ad could lead viewers to believe that entirely replacing conventional food with Huel products was nutritionally appropriate without the necessity of professional dietary guidance.
Huel, which markets powdered food, shakes, and ready meals, contended its products were intended for occasional meal replacement or as part of a calorie-controlled diet. The company asserted its brand name, derived from 'human fuel', and its slogan 'complete nutrition' merely indicated the products contained all essential nutrients within a single serving, not that they should constitute a person's entire diet.
However, the ASA concluded that the advertisement’s presentation, including phrases like 'Don't think of it as food. Think of it as Huel,' combined with visuals of individuals consuming Huel products at various meals, implied a complete dietary substitution was being endorsed. The watchdog highlighted that completely replacing conventional food with a total diet replacement product is a significant dietary shift that should only occur under the supervision of a healthcare professional. The advertisement failed to convey this crucial caveat, thereby breaching advertising codes related to misleading representations and responsible marketing.
The ruling mandates that the advertisement must not be broadcast again in its current form. Huel has been instructed to ensure future advertisements clearly communicate any necessary expert supervision required for total diet replacement, or avoid implying such a comprehensive dietary shift.
