Family Targets Wetherspoon Pub After Online Hotel Booking Scam
A family's holiday plans were disrupted when an online hotel booking scam led them to a Wetherspoon pub in Manchester, rather than the accommodation they believed they had secured. The incident highlights a growing issue where fraudsters utilise genuine addresses of commercial premises to lend credibility to fake listings.
Consumer advocacy group Which? revealed that the Piccadilly-area pub has become an unexpected destination for up to 20 unsuspecting tourists each day. These individuals arrive, often with luggage, under the impression they have a reservation for a non-existent hotel at the pub's address.
One victim, who had planned a family trip from Northern Ireland, discovered the deception only upon arrival. She recounted booking a three-night stay for £340 through a social media advertisement. The advertisement displayed images of a luxury room and the address of The Waterhouse pub. Upon attempting to check in, the family was informed by pub staff that no hotel existed there and they were likely victims of a scam.
Which? has reported similar fraudulent hotel listings appearing on various online platforms. The group advises consumers to exercise caution when booking accommodation online, particularly through social media advertisements. Verifying hotel legitimacy directly with official websites and checking reviews on established travel sites are recommended steps to avoid such scams.
