Hundreds Detained in Delhi as Authorities Suppress Farmers' Protest March
Hundreds of farmers, including leaders of the 'Cockroach' group, were detained by Indian authorities in Delhi on Wednesday as they attempted a planned march on the capital. The demonstration aimed to pressure the government into guaranteeing minimum support prices (MSPs) for all crops, a long-standing demand following previous widespread protests.
Ahead of the planned protest, tens of thousands of security personnel were deployed across Delhi and its border areas. Major roads were heavily barricaded with concrete blocks and razor wire, effectively sealing off the city to prevent the influx of protesters. This robust security operation reflects the government's determination to contain dissent, particularly from agricultural sectors that have historically proven capable of mobilising significant opposition.
The farmers' movement argues that current government policies fail to adequately protect their livelihoods, leaving them vulnerable to market fluctuations and exploitation. Their demands for MSPs across all agricultural produce are seen as essential for economic security in India's vast farming communities.
