K-Pop Star Song Mino Receives Suspended Sentence for Military Service Violations
South Korean K-pop star Song Mino has been convicted of violating the country's Military Service Act and received a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years. The ruling by the Seoul Central District Court follows charges that the artist, a member of the popular group Winner, repeatedly failed to report for his mandatory social service duties.
Details emerging from the court proceedings indicate Song Mino, whose full name is Song Min-ho, was absent from his assigned social service more than ten times between 2021 and 2023. These violations occurred during a period when he was serving in a non-active duty role, a common arrangement for individuals deemed medically unfit for frontline military service.
Mandatory military service, typically lasting between 18 and 21 months, is a deeply ingrained requirement for all able-bodied South Korean men. The state maintains strict enforcement, reflecting its ongoing security posture. While exemptions are rare, high-profile cases involving celebrities often draw significant public scrutiny regarding equity in service obligations.
