Kashim Chowdhury Juggled Five Civil Service Roles, Contracted for 183 Hours Weekly
Kashim Chowdhury, a high-ranking civil servant, has admitted to significant errors in his management of multiple government roles, which saw him contracted for a staggering 183 hours per week across five different positions. This figure dramatically surpasses the 168 hours available in an entire week, raising serious questions about oversight and accountability within public service.
Mr Chowdhury served as the Director of Cyber Security at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, while simultaneously holding leadership roles at the Cabinet Office, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and the Department for Education. His portfolio also included a position at the Crown Commercial Service, an executive agency of the Cabinet Office. The arrangement, which spanned several months, has drawn scrutiny regarding the practicalities of such an extensive workload.
Responding to inquiries, Mr Chowdhury stated, "I recognise that I made mistakes in taking on multiple roles at the same time and in not notifying my employer of them." The revelation underscores the potential for conflicts of interest and a lack of effective governance within the upper echelons of the civil service. Critics argue that such arrangements not only compromise efficiency but also undermine public trust in government operations, particularly when individuals are contracted for timeframes that are physically impossible to fulfil.
