Keir Starmer Warns Andy Burnham Over Leadership Challenge, Urges Focus on Manchester Mayoral By-Election
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a clear warning to Andy Burnham, urging him to defer any immediate leadership challenge should he secure the Makerfield parliamentary seat. Starmer emphasised that the party's focus must remain on the impending Greater Manchester mayoral by-election, expected by 6 August if Burnham wins on Thursday.
Speaking from the G7 summit, Starmer stated that a leadership contest would be a "bad thing" for the country and reiterated his intention to resist any such move. He highlighted the criticality of the potential mayoral election, noting, "we do have a Manchester mayoralty by-election which will follow immediately on if Andy Burnham wins the by-election... so we're all going to have to focus on that."
Starmer also hinted at a significant role for Burnham within a Labour government, telling reporters, "I hope he wins the by-election and he'll play a big part in the Labour government."
This intervention follows former Health Secretary Wes Streeting's declaration that he is prepared to trigger a leadership contest as early as next week. Streeting, who resigned last month, indicated he delayed his challenge to allow Burnham to participate. He argued that "uncertainty and paralysis" within the Labour leadership would necessitate resolution should the party secure the Makerfield seat.
Some Labour MPs reportedly express concern that Reform UK could unexpectedly win the Manchester mayoral by-election, despite Burnham's substantial victory in the 2024 contest. Conversely, Burnham's supporters contend that the significance of the mayoralty only strengthens the argument for his swift ascension to prime minister.
