Kenya Records Second Ebola Fatality as 65-Year-Old Woman Dies in Uganda Border Region
A second Ebola fatality has been confirmed in Kenya, with a 65-year-old woman succumbing to the virus in a region near the Ugandan border. The victim was identified as a close family member of the initial case, a man who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The deceased woman had been in close contact with the first patient, a 50-year-old man, who died from the disease earlier this week. Both cases were reported in the western part of Kenya, an area that shares a border with Uganda, where an Ebola outbreak has been ongoing for several weeks. Ugandan health officials have been tracking the spread of the Sudan ebolavirus strain, distinct from the Zaire strain that caused a devastating outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kenyan health authorities have indicated they are closely monitoring 58 individuals who were in contact with the two confirmed cases. These individuals are currently under observation to prevent further transmission. The swift identification of these cases and the subsequent contact tracing efforts are crucial in containing the potential spread of the highly virulent disease within Kenya.
