King Charles III Marks 60 Years Since Aberfan Colliery Tip Collapsed
King Charles III has commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster, characterising the event as 'the most tragic of days imaginable'. On 21 October 1966, a colliery spoil tip collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 116 children and 28 adults in the Welsh village.
In a message sent to the Aberfan Memorial Trust, the monarch reflected on the enduring impact of the tragedy, stating that the 'unbearable pain' of the day continues to resonate. The disaster saw a coal waste tip slide down a mountainside, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and several homes.
His Majesty acknowledged the resilience and dignity of the Aberfan community over the six decades since the catastrophe. This solemn anniversary serves as a reminder of the industrial negligence that led to such profound loss, and the persistent efforts to honour the victims and support survivors.
