Labour Executive Clears Andy Burnham for Makerfield By-Election Bid
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has been cleared by Labour's National Executive Committee to pursue selection as the party's candidate in the Makerfield by-election. This marks a reversal of the committee's earlier decision in January, which blocked his attempt to stand in a different by-election.
Should Burnham be selected and subsequently win the Makerfield seat, a traditional Labour stronghold that has shown recent shifts towards Reform UK, observers widely anticipate he would position himself to challenge the incumbent Labour Prime Minister. The Prime Minister has, however, resisted calls for his resignation following recent unfavourable election outcomes, with five ministers having resigned and nearly 90 Labour MPs urging him to step down.
The Makerfield constituency became vacant following the resignation of Labour MP Josh Simons, who explicitly stated his intent to create an opening for Burnham. The by-election is provisionally set for 18 June.
Under Labour Party rules, Burnham is ineligible to formally enter a leadership contest unless he holds a seat in Parliament. Announcing his application for Makerfield, Burnham stated his ambition to extend the "change we have brought to Greater Manchester to the whole of the UK."
Applications for the candidacy closed on 18 May, with a selection meeting scheduled for 21 May.
Wes Streeting, who recently resigned as Health Secretary, has been mentioned as another potential leadership contender. His allies claim he commands the support of 81 Labour MPs, the threshold required to trigger a leadership contest. Streeting welcomed Burnham's potential return, remarking, "We need our best players on the pitch."
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticised Burnham's move, stating he "wants to rock up and just be prime minister despite being out of Parliament for a decade." Reform UK's deputy leader, Richard Tice, vowed his party would "throw everything possible" into securing a victory in Makerfield.
