Lambeth and Southwark Youths Face Rising Gang Violence, Police Confirm
Violence involving young people in Lambeth and Southwark has seen a notable increase, according to Metropolitan Police officials. The areas are identified as experiencing particular challenges, with a growing number of children being drawn into gang-related activity and subsequent harm. Commander Dr Alison Griffiths confirmed the trend, highlighting that youths are frequently involved in street robbery, drug dealing, and serious violence.
Police data indicates a substantial rise in arrests of children for violent offences in south London. For example, arrests of 10 to 17-year-olds for violence against the person rose from 73 in 2022 to 101 in 2023 in Lambeth. Southwark saw a similar trajectory, with arrests climbing from 86 to 110 over the same period. These figures underscore the worsening conditions for young people in these boroughs, where systemic issues continue to foster environments conducive to exploitation.
Dr Griffiths emphasised that gang exploitation in these areas has evolved, now encompassing children as young as nine. These vulnerable individuals are often coerced into acting as drug couriers, with their homes frequently taken over by gangs for dealing purposes, a practice known as 'cuckooing'. The police acknowledge that the complexity of these dynamics necessitates a multi-agency approach, yet the consistent upward trend in youth violence suggests that current interventions are struggling to stem the tide of this severe social problem.
