Lister Hospital Failures Contributed to Lady Joan Branson's Death

Lady Joan Branson, 96, died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Lister Hospital in Chelsea in September 2023. A subsequent investigation by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has identified significant care failures, concluding that these directly ‘contributed to’ her death.

The CQC report highlighted multiple deficiencies in the hospital’s provision of care, particularly concerning its ability to manage emergencies. It found that the hospital’s medical emergency team was not adequately trained or equipped to respond effectively to critical incidents. Furthermore, the report noted a severe lack of suitable equipment and insufficient staffing levels, exacerbating the risks to patients.

Inspectors also uncovered that the Lister Hospital failed to maintain accurate and complete patient records, hindering proper assessment and timely intervention. These systemic issues collectively compromised the safety and quality of care provided to Lady Joan and other patients.
