European Central Banks Repatriate Hundreds of Tonnes of Gold from US Storage

Central banks across Europe have quietly moved hundreds of tonnes of gold back to their home countries from vaults in the United States and other locations. Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria are among the nations that have undertaken substantial repatriation efforts in recent years, citing a desire for greater control over their national reserves.

Germany completed the return of 300 tonnes of its gold from the US Federal Reserve's vault in New York and 374 tonnes from the Banque de France in Paris by 2017. The German Bundesbank now holds more than half of its total gold reserves, some 1,712 tonnes, in Frankfurt. Similarly, the Netherlands repatriated 120 tonnes from New York in 2014, while Austria moved 110 tonnes from the Bank of England in London by 2018.

These moves mark a divergence from the post-Second World War practice where many European nations stored their gold in the United States, primarily for security and to facilitate international transactions within the dollar-centric financial system. While central bankers publicly attribute the repatriations to diversification and risk management, the underlying impetus appears to be a broader reassessment of national asset security and sovereign control. The shift suggests a quiet erosion of trust in the efficacy and political neutrality of storing national wealth in foreign jurisdictions, particularly as geopolitical tensions influence economic relations. The United States continues to hold the largest proportion of its own gold reserves at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
