Meghan Markle Issued Statement on Disturbing Allegations Against Father Thomas Markle in 2018
The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has responded to recent reports by stating she was made aware of "disturbing allegations" against her estranged father, Thomas Markle, in 2018. The clarification came via her legal team, Schillings, following a report in The Times newspaper.
The Times claimed that Mr Markle, 79, is the subject of a police investigation in the Philippines related to child sex abuse images. The newspaper detailed that Philippine authorities had requested assistance from UK police in their inquiry into the former Hollywood lighting director.
Schillings confirmed that Ms Markle, through her then-legal representatives, informed Palace officials of the allegations in 2018. The statement from Schillings emphasised that Ms Markle has had no contact with her father since her wedding in 2018. The legal firm also highlighted that they would not be commenting further on the specific details of the allegations, given their sensitive nature.
This development adds another layer to the protracted and public estrangement between the Duchess and her father, which began shortly before her marriage to Prince Harry. Mr Markle has previously been interviewed by UK police under caution in connection with other matters.
