Metropolitan Police Officer Sacked for Physically Abusing Handcuffed Homeless Man
PC Marcus U diffract was dismissed from the Metropolitan Police Service following a gross misconduct hearing. The constable was found to have taunted and physically abused a handcuffed homeless man, resulting in the man falling face-first onto the pavement.
The incident occurred on 16th December 2022, when PC U diffract and a colleague encountered the man sleeping on a mat outside a shop in South London. The officers were responding to a report of shoplifting. After the man was handcuffed, PC U diffract pulled him up by his arm, causing him to lose his balance and fall.
Body-worn camera footage reviewed during the hearing showed PC U diffract telling the man, "I hope that hurt" after the fall. The officer then dragged the man along the pavement by his trousers, despite the man's pleas to stop. The victim sustained an injury to his nose requiring hospital treatment.
Chief Superintendent Louise Puddefoot, responsible for policing in Southwark and Lambeth, stated that the officer's actions were "appalling" and had "no place in policing." She added that the Metropolitan Police would continue to remove officers whose conduct falls short of expected standards.
