Metropolitan Police Officers Face Investigation After Serial Sex Offender Murders Two Women
Two Metropolitan Police officers are now under investigation for gross misconduct. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed the inquiry centres on their management of serial sex offender Simon Levy, who went on to murder two women while under their supervision.
Levy, 50, was a registered sex offender, subject to monitoring by the police when he killed Shereen Islam, 45, and Louise Wilkinson, 62. Both women were murdered at their homes in north-west London in 2023. Levy received two whole-life prison sentences for these brutal crimes.
The IOPC’s investigation, initiated in September 2023, is examining the officers’ adherence to relevant policies and procedures in their management of Levy. The inquiry also scrutinises the appropriateness and effectiveness of the risk assessments conducted on him. This comes after widespread criticism regarding the Metropolitan Police’s repeated failures to adequately manage high-risk offenders, including those with a documented history of sexual violence.
A spokesperson for the IOPC stated that the two officers, a sergeant and a constable, have now received gross misconduct notices. This development underscores the persistent questions surrounding the Metropolitan Police’s capacity to protect the public from known threats, particularly concerning individuals with a history of serious sexual offences.
