Mimizan Pétanque Player, 68, Dies After Metal Boule Strike in Team Dispute
A 68-year-old pétanque player suffered fatal injuries in Mimizan, France, after reportedly being struck with a metal boule during an altercation between two rival teams. The incident occurred following an argument that erupted when a team accustomed to playing on the beach sought shade in the town's playing area during a heatwave.
Arrest Made in Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have arrested an 81-year-old man in connection with the death. He remains in custody as investigations continue. Mont-de-Marsan public prosecutor Alexa Dubourg confirmed to local newspaper Sud Ouest that evidence indicates the 81-year-old struck the victim with a pétanque boule. Dubourg characterised the event as "an argument which degenerated into a physical [confrontation]," adding that inquiries are underway to ascertain the roles of all individuals present at the boulodrome on 17 June.
Pétanque, a popular French pastime, involves players rolling hollow steel balls as close as possible to a smaller wooden target ball. Local radio station Ici Gascogne reported that the victim did not die immediately from the impact but collapsed minutes later due to a heart attack. A local resident noted to AFP news agency, "There is a mega rivalry between the beach pétanque players and those in the town but I didn't think it was at that level."
