Mother and Son Jailed Over Hit-and-Run Seriously Injuring Six-Year-Old Boy
Custodial Sentences for Family Members
Kaylem Longhurst, 18, has been sentenced to 14 months in a young offenders' institution after admitting dangerous driving and being found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of public justice. The incident on Central Drive in Shotton, Flintshire, on 11 September 2024, left Arlo Buckley, then six, with multiple serious injuries.
His mother, Terry Follows, received a 26-month jail term for her "leading role" in orchestrating efforts to help her son evade justice. Judge Simon Mills highlighted Follows' lack of initial remorse and her active organisation of the conspiracy, which included burning clothes and relocating the motorbike involved in the crash.
The Aftermath for Arlo Buckley
Arlo's parents described the profound impact of the incident, with their son still undergoing neurological treatment and attending an epilepsy clinic. His mother, Hannah, recounted the terror of seeing Arlo in intensive care with serious head injuries, fearing she would lose him. The family spoke of Arlo's significant change from a lively child to one easily overwhelmed by crowds.
Further Convictions and Police Statement
Shane Hunt, Longhurst's sister's partner, was given a 21-month custodial sentence for his role in transporting Longhurst away from the scene. Longhurst's sister, Cara Haran, who pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge, received nine months for burning her brother's clothing, with the judge considering her responsibilities as a mother to a young baby.
Temporary Detective Inspector Katie Davies of North Wales Police condemned the "shocking and deeply distressing incident," specifically noting the concerning involvement of family members in attempting to evade justice and destroy evidence.
