Swalwell Quits California Governor Race Amidst Sexual Misconduct Allegations
US Congressman Eric Swalwell has formally announced his withdrawal from the California governor's race. The Democrat's departure comes in the wake of significant pressure stemming from multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Four women have accused Swalwell of various forms of misconduct, including sexual harassment and rape, claims he denies, promising to counter them with "facts."
His decision arrives at a crucial juncture in the primary election, just weeks before postal ballots are dispatched for the 2nd June election. Swalwell was previously considered a frontrunner among the Democratic contenders vying to replace outgoing Governor Gavin Newsom and lead the United States' most populous state.
In a public statement shared on X, Swalwell declared: "I am suspending my campaign for Governor." He added: "To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I've made in my past. I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made - but that's my fight, not a campaign's."
The first allegations surfaced in the San Francisco Chronicle, followed by CNN publishing similar accusations from four women who had worked for him. Swalwell's legal team reportedly sent cease-and-desist letters to two of the accusers prior to the public revelations. Despite losing key endorsements from prominent figures such as Senator Adam Schiff and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Swalwell maintains his innocence. "For nearly 20 years, I have served the public - as a prosecutor and a congressman and have always protected women. I will defend myself with the facts and where necessary bring legal action," he asserted, indicating his immediate focus is on his family and defending his public service against what he terms "lies."
