Mother of Greek Politician Thanassis Manis Dies Following Thessaloniki Arson Attack
The mother of Thanassis Manis, a Member of Parliament for the ruling New Democracy party, has succumbed to injuries following an arson attack on her residence in Thessaloniki. The woman, aged 92, had been hospitalised since the early hours of Wednesday after assailants targeted her home with a petrol bomb and other improvised incendiary devices.
This incident was one of three separate attacks utilising petrol bombs and similar devices that occurred across Thessaloniki within a short timeframe. The assaults took place just hours before a general strike, called by Greece's largest trade unions, paralysed public services and disrupted transport nationwide. The timing has led to speculation regarding the motives behind the coordinated attacks.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incidents, though no arrests have been made public at this time. The death of Manis's mother casts a further shadow over the political climate in Greece, a country frequently grappling with social unrest and acts of political violence.
