Nathan Cofnas Suspended by Cambridge Over Jason Arday Plagiarism Allegations
Nathan Cofnas, a research fellow in philosophy at the University of Cambridge, has been suspended from his position. The suspension comes after Cofnas publicly accused the late Professor Jason Arday, a prominent sociologist at Cambridge, of plagiarism.
Cofnas, who is affiliated with Cambridge's Faculty of Philosophy and Peterhouse college, claims the university is investigating him for discrimination, though specific details of the alleged discriminatory behaviour remain unconfirmed by the institution. Cambridge University has not publicly commented on the specifics of personnel matters.
Professor Arday, who passed away in October 2023 at the age of 38, was recognised as one of the youngest Black professors in the UK, specialising in race, inequality, and education. His work received significant media attention and acclaim.
The allegations of plagiarism against Arday, which Cofnas published on his personal blog, have prompted considerable debate within academic circles, particularly regarding the handling of posthumous accusations and the responsibilities of researchers in making such claims.
