New York City Penn Station Stabbing Injures Five Before Trump NBA Finals Visit
Five people were injured in a stabbing incident at New York City's Penn Station, with one individual suffering serious wounds, two moderate, and two minor, according to the Fire Department of New York.
The New York Police Department initiated a manhunt, apprehending a suspect shortly after the attack, which took place around 19:00 EST (0:00 BST).
The incident precedes a planned visit by former US President Donald Trump to watch the New York Knicks in the NBA finals on Monday. This event has already prompted city officials to implement new security protocols, including a 'no-bag' policy and the cancellation of an outdoor watch party near Madison Square Garden, where the game will be held.
Law enforcement sources indicated the stabbing was a random act of violence, reportedly carried out by an 'emotionally disturbed' individual who was subsequently arrested by Amtrak police. All injured parties were transported to Bellevue Hospital.
Penn Station, located directly beneath Madison Square Garden, is a critical transport hub, and the timing of the attack coincides with significant public safety deployments for the high-profile sporting event.
