Normandy Veteran Henry Rice Dies at 100, Served as Signalman Post-D-Day
Henry Rice, a veteran of the Normandy landings who served as a signalman in the crucial days after D-Day, has died aged 100. Mr Rice, from Cranleigh, Surrey, was aboard a landing craft that transported troops and supplies to the French coast during the Allied invasion in June 1944.
His vessel operated in the English Channel, maintaining vital communication links and assisting with logistics as Allied forces established their foothold in occupied France. The signalman's role was instrumental in coordinating movements and ensuring that vital messages reached the front lines.
Mr Rice's passing marks the loss of another member of the generation that participated directly in the pivotal operation to liberate Western Europe. His contributions, like those of many others, underpinned the success of the Allied efforts against Nazi Germany.
