Northern Ireland Secretary Unlocks £4 Million Emergency Funding for PSNI After Belfast Disorder
The UK government has authorised a £4 million emergency funding injection for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) in the wake of significant public disorder across Belfast last week. The violence, which included assaults on homes, businesses, and vehicles, also saw healthcare workers subjected to racist attacks. The unrest was reportedly triggered after footage of a knife attack in north Belfast, leaving a victim with serious injuries, was circulated on social media.
Intervention Targets PSNI Overtime and Aid
Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn confirmed the financial intervention is intended to cover the PSNI's escalated overtime costs and the mutual aid required, which included the deployment of additional officers from Police Scotland. Mr Benn visited Northern Ireland to meet with police, emergency responders, and community groups involved in the response to the recent events. He stated, “Our most important duty as government is to keep the public safe. This £4 million package demonstrates our commitment to supporting the PSNI given the significant challenges they faced in confronting the disorder in order to protect the community.” The funds will be drawn from government reserves as a one-off uplift to the PSNI's existing security budget.
Civil Unrest Displaces Families, Fuels Housing Crisis
Concurrently, Communities Minister Gordon Lyons disclosed that 115 households in Northern Ireland have sought assistance from the Housing Executive, citing civil unrest as the reason for their displacement. Mr Lyons informed Stormont's communities committee that 76 individuals presented as homeless, resulting in 38 families being placed in temporary accommodation. The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) minister criticised the continued targeting of individuals “for the colour of their skin” and expressed his understanding of the fear prevalent in many communities, assuring that his department is providing all possible assistance.
