OpenAI Limits Teen ChatGPT Usage as Research Labels Platform an 'Unacceptable Risk'
A recent study has concluded that ChatGPT poses an "unacceptable risk" to teenagers, citing substantial failures in its built-in guardrails designed to protect younger users. The research found that vital protective measures within the artificial intelligence platform frequently proved ineffective.
OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, stated that usage by those under 18 is already limited, with their terms of service stipulating a minimum age of 13, and requiring parental consent for users aged 13 to 18. However, the study's findings directly challenge the efficacy of these safeguards.
The investigation revealed that when teenagers engaged with ChatGPT, the platform often failed to adequately moderate inappropriate or harmful content, leading to concerns over potential exposure to unsuitable material. This raises serious questions about the practical implementation of age restrictions and content filtering on widely accessible AI tools.
