PC Jess Turnbull Killed on Duty in Cramlington; 73-Year-Old Man Arrested
Police Constable Jess Turnbull, 19, has died after being struck by a car in Cramlington, Northumberland. The incident occurred on Monday night as PC Turnbull responded to a report of a separate collision on the A189 Spine Road.
PC Turnbull, who joined Northumbria Police last September, was injured when a black Mercedes crashed into a marked police vehicle at approximately 23:10 BST. She was taken to hospital but succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.
A 73-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released on bail.
Tributes have been paid to PC Turnbull, described by Northumbria Police as a "dedicated and committed" officer. Peter Douthwaite, headteacher at George Stephenson High School where she was a former pupil, stated she "always wanted to make a difference" and "lived a life of service".
Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth acknowledged that PC Turnbull's death serves as a stark reminder of the "risks police officers face every single day".
