Police in South Wales Seize Illegal Off-Road Vehicles Damaging Protected Habitats

South Wales Police are enforcing new powers allowing on-the-spot seizure of illegal off-road vehicles, addressing a reported surge in damage to protected habitats. Officers have warned that individuals found operating such vehicles unlawfully will face a "long walk home" following confiscation.

This intensified strategy comes in response to escalating concerns over environmental degradation caused by unauthorised off-road activity. Protected sites in areas such as Neath Port Talbot have reportedly suffered significant harm, prompting a more assertive police response.

The move is intended to deter repeat offenders and safeguard vulnerable ecosystems. Vehicles found to be uninsured, untaxed, or driven without a valid licence, in addition to being operated on private land without permission or on public land where it is prohibited, are subject to immediate seizure. This operational shift reflects a concerted effort to preserve the region's natural heritage against recreational misuse.
