Prime Minister Burnham Appeals to Retailers to Halt Disposable Barbecue Sales

Prime Minister Burnham has urged retailers to voluntarily stop selling disposable barbecues, emphasising the severe fire risk posed by their use during the current exceptionally dry weather conditions. The public is also being asked to refrain from using single-use grills.

This appeal follows a series of destructive fires across the UK, many linked to the use of disposable barbecues in open spaces. One recent incident in Norfolk saw more than 15 hectares of woodland completely destroyed after a discarded barbecue ignited dry vegetation.

Government officials have underscored that the prolonged absence of significant rainfall has rendered natural landscapes highly susceptible to ignition. A spokesperson for Number 10 stated, "The Prime Minister is clear that public safety and environmental protection must be prioritised. We implore retailers to act responsibly and remove these items from sale until weather conditions improve, and we ask the public to exercise extreme caution."

While no formal ban has been implemented, the government is relying on voluntary compliance from retailers and public awareness to mitigate the risk of further wildfires, which place considerable strain on emergency services and devastate natural habitats.
