Radio Fault Causes Major Rail Delays Across Southern England, Thousands Affected
Major disruption affected several rail services across southern England today following an earlier radio communication fault. The issue, which impacted connectivity between trains and signallers, led to widespread cancellations and delays for thousands of passengers.
South Western Railway, CrossCountry, Southern, Gatwick Express, the London Overground, Great Western Railway, and Thameslink all experienced significant issues. The fault, reported at 08:53 BST, was declared resolved by 11:00 BST, with some services gradually returning to normal. However, National Rail warned that significant disruption, including delays of up to 90 minutes and further cancellations, would persist until the end of the day.
By late afternoon, Southern, Thameslink, and Gatwick Express services were largely unaffected, and the London Overground resolved its issues by midday. Nevertheless, passengers utilising South Western Railway, CrossCountry, and Great Western Railway faced continued problems during the evening rush hour. Transport for London urged commuters to avoid London Waterloo, a major interchange, due to severe overcrowding exacerbated by a separate track fault on the Jubilee line.
South Western Railway, which had previously warned of extensive delays and alterations, advised that substantial disruption would continue as efforts were made to normalise services. Passengers were informed that tickets would be valid for travel on Friday, or on alternative rail, bus, and London Underground services today at no extra charge. An unrelated signalling problem at Wandsworth Town further compounded issues for SWR services.
The disruption left many passengers stranded, with stories emerging of missed connections and financial implications. One tattooist, Gemma Givans, 28, faced the cancellation of her London Victoria train, stating, “If I don’t work, I don’t get paid,” highlighting the financial strain. Caleb Anderson, an 18-year-old student, experienced multi-hour delays from Portsmouth, impacting his college attendance ahead of A-Levels, describing the situation as “stressful.” Paul Barrick, 50, travelling to Portsmouth, lamented missing his Isle of Wight ferry, expressing his frustration with “a lot of inconvenience and, of course, disgruntled passengers.”
