Radio Fault Causes Widespread Rail Cancellations Across Southern England Transport Network
Major rail services across southern England experienced significant disruption on Thursday morning due to a radio communications fault. The issue, which affected the crucial link between trains and signallers, led to widespread cancellations and delays across several operators.
Affected Services and Impact
South Western Railway, CrossCountry, Southern Trains, Gatwick Express, the London Overground, and Thameslink all reported substantial service interruptions. The problem was first reported before 09:00 BST, with operations returning to normal by approximately 10:30, according to National Rail. A Network Rail spokesperson confirmed staff had worked to resolve the fault, allowing services to resume.
Southern Rail specifically noted impacts on services to and from London Victoria, as well as its West Coastway route connecting Brighton with Portsmouth and Southampton. Gatwick Express also warned passengers of delays for services operating on the London Victoria line. South Western Railway advised its entire network could see services cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes, or revised. Thameslink had also indicated likely delays for services travelling to and from Brighton, Horsham, and Three Bridges. Southeastern rail services remained unaffected by the fault.
Passengers holding tickets for affected Gatwick Express services were permitted to use alternative routes without incurring additional costs. Travellers were advised to monitor station screens and listen to announcements for the latest updates.
