Reform UK Proposes Benefits Ban for EU Citizens, Risking Expats' Rights
Reform UK has outlined a contentious plan to exclude foreign nationals, including those from the European Union, from accessing welfare benefits in the United Kingdom. This policy initiative, detailed by the party, would require a fundamental alteration to the existing Brexit trade and co-operation agreement between the UK and the EU.
Such a renegotiation carries significant implications, not least for the hundreds of thousands of British citizens currently living and working across the EU. Experts and campaigners have swiftly highlighted that reciprocal arrangements are a cornerstone of international social security pacts. Were the UK to unilaterally revoke benefits access for EU citizens, it would predictably prompt retaliatory measures from Brussels, potentially stripping British expatriates of their current social security entitlements within EU member states.
The proposal signals Reform UK's intent to tighten immigration policies and reshape the UK's relationship with the continent, prioritising a nativist approach to welfare provisions at the potential cost of British citizens' rights abroad.
