Somali Referee Omar Artan Barred Entry to US for World Cup Despite Valid Visa
Somali football referee Omar Artan was refused entry to the United States last week, preventing him from officiating at the Street Child World Cup. Artan reported undergoing an 11-hour interrogation by immigration officials upon arrival, despite holding what he described as a legitimate visa and all required travel documents.
Artan’s itinerary included a layover in Qatar before his flight to the USA. He was scheduled to officiate matches at the tournament, which serves as a platform for homeless children globally. His rejection highlights continuing challenges faced by individuals from certain regions attempting to enter Western nations, often under intensified scrutiny.
The Street Child World Cup, an organisation dedicated to advocating for street-connected children, has not yet commented on the specifics of Artan’s case or the impact of his absence from the event.
