South Africa Seeks to Deport Beauty Queen Chidimma Adetshina, Citing Irregular Entry
South African authorities are pursuing the deportation of Chidimma Adetshina, a beauty pageant winner who maintains she was born and raised in the country. The Department of Home Affairs alleges Ms Adetshina entered South Africa irregularly, despite her claims of being a natural-born citizen.
Ms Adetshina, who won the Miss Mamelodi Sundowns pageant in 2022, is currently engaged in legal proceedings to prevent her removal. She has stated publicly that she was born in South Africa, attending primary and secondary school there.
The government's stance underscores a broader, often contested, immigration policy within South Africa, frequently targeting individuals from other African nations. Human rights organisations have consistently documented concerns regarding the department's handling of immigration cases, particularly the regularity and fairness of deportation processes.
The Department of Home Affairs has yet to provide specific details regarding the alleged irregularities in Ms Adetshina's entry, stating only that her case is a matter for the courts. This lack of transparency has prompted criticism from legal observers, who argue it impedes a fair public understanding of the allegations.
