Student Protests Erupt Across India Following NEET Exam Irregularities
Thousands of students across India have initiated significant protests following allegations of widespread irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), a crucial examination for medical school admissions. The demonstrations, which have gathered considerable momentum, target the National Testing Agency (NTA), the body responsible for administering the exam.
Students are demanding a re-examination, citing concerns over leaked papers and inflated scores. The controversy gained prominence after 67 candidates achieved perfect scores, including several from the same examination centre, prompting accusations of systemic malpractice. Petitions have been filed with the Supreme Court of India, which has acknowledged the serious nature of the allegations.
The NTA initially denied widespread issues but has since cancelled the NEET-PG exam and established a committee to investigate the matter. However, student organisations and opposition parties view these measures as insufficient, criticising the government's perceived failure to ensure fair examination processes. This unrest represents one of the largest student movements India has witnessed in recent years, highlighting deep-seated frustration with the integrity of public examinations.
