Swiss Prosecutors Cease 'Potential Crime' Inquiry into Scottish Wingsuit Flyer Liam Byrne's Death
Swiss prosecutors have ceased their inquiry into the death of Scottish wingsuit flyer Liam Byrne, who died on the Gitschen mountain in June of last year. The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Canton of Uri stated that while it investigated the possibility of a 'potential crime', no evidence emerged to support such a conclusion.
Byrne, a 24-year-old British champion in the extreme sport, was fatally injured during a jump. The investigation determined that his death was a consequence of the inherent dangers associated with wingsuit flying, a sport carrying significant and acknowledged risks.
The decision by Swiss authorities to close the case underscores the common official interpretation of such incidents, which often frame them as unfortunate individual accidents rather than examining broader safety protocols or regulatory oversight in a high-risk activity that sees consistent fatalities. It further highlights the legal framework in which such extreme sports operate, where participants are often assumed to fully comprehend and accept the severe risks involved, limiting the scope for criminal culpability.
