Thirty US States Sue Meta Over Instagram and Facebook Impact on Young Users

A coalition comprising thirty US states has initiated legal proceedings against Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, asserting that its social media platforms are engineered to exploit and addict young users. The lawsuit, filed in a Californian federal court, contends that Meta's design choices deliberately target children and teenagers, exacerbating a youth mental health crisis.

The legal challenge, led by Colorado and California, claims Meta utilised "deceptive and manipulative tactics" to foster addiction among younger demographics, despite internal research reportedly indicating the detrimental effects of its products on adolescent mental health. The states argue Meta concealed these findings and misrepresented the safety of its platforms.

Specifically, the lawsuit points to features such as infinite scroll and persistent alerts as mechanisms designed to maximise engagement and addiction. These design elements, it is alleged, keep young users engaged for extended periods, contributing to mental health issues including depression, anxiety, and insomnia.

The plaintiffs are seeking a court order to compel Meta to cease these allegedly harmful practices and to impose financial penalties. This legal action underscores a growing governmental and public scrutiny of social media's impact on young people, particularly in Western nations where digital platforms are deeply integrated into daily life and their influence is increasingly scrutinised by public health bodies.
