TikTok Introduces £3.99 Monthly Subscription for Ad-Free Viewing in United Kingdom
TikTok is implementing a monthly subscription for users in the United Kingdom seeking an ad-free platform experience. Beginning this week, users aged 18 and over will receive notifications about the £3.99 monthly charge for its "TikTok Ad-Free" service.
While TikTok asserts this offers users greater choice, industry observers suggest it signifies a shift towards platforms monetising privacy. Social media analyst Matt Navarra highlighted this as part of a pattern where companies "put a monthly price on stepping outside of the ad-targeting machine."
Subscribers to TikTok Ad-Free will not encounter company-delivered advertisements, particularly within the "For You" feed. However, sponsored content from creators, often marked with "#ad," will still be visible. Users who opt against the subscription will continue to receive personalised advertisements, with controls for customisation available within the app's Settings.
Crucially, the ability for UK users to opt out of personalised ads without subscribing, previously available, will be removed under these new terms. This move aligns TikTok with other platforms now adopting a "consent or pay" framework to comply with data protection regulations and generate revenue from users unwilling to be tracked across services.
This emerging model suggests a potential two-tiered internet: one for those able to pay for greater control and privacy, and another for those who cannot, thereby normalising the commodification of online privacy.
