UK State Pension Ranks Lowest Among Wealthy Nations, Overtaken by South Korea, Japan
New analysis reveals the UK state pension stands as one of the least generous amongst 34 wealthy, industrialised nations, with only Mexico offering a lower basic provision. The UK's contribution-based system provides a flat rate, which now falls short of provisions in countries such as South Korea and Japan, despite these nations having significantly lower average wages.
This disparity highlights a long-term trend of successive UK governments failing to match the pension provisions seen across much of Europe and North America. Critics argue that the current system places an undue burden on private savings, a luxury not afforded to all workers, and risks increasing pensioner poverty. While the ‘triple lock’ mechanism aims to protect the pension’s value, its starting point remains comparatively low, leaving many retirees reliant on means-tested benefits.
