Ukraine Strikes Cheboksary Military Plant 900km Inside Russia, Mariupol, and Oil Refinery
Ukrainian forces conducted a missile attack deep within Russian territory, hitting a significant military plant in Cheboksary, Chuvash Republic. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the strike, stating that FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles targeted the drone and missile components facility, located more than 900km from the conflict's front line. Local officials in Cheboksary reported three injuries from a missile impact.
Kyiv further claimed successful strikes on the Moscow-occupied port of Mariupol on the Sea of Azov, a Russian oil refinery in Samara, and an oil tanker identified as part of a 'shadow fleet' in the Black Sea.
These actions represent a notable expansion of Ukraine's targeting strategy, which has recently focused on drone strikes against Russian energy infrastructure. While Kyiv maintains these sites are legitimate targets for disrupting Moscow's war effort, deep missile strikes within Russia have been less frequent.
Russia's Ministry of Defence stated its air defence systems intercepted or shot down 326 Ukrainian drones across several regions overnight. Conversely, Ukraine's air force reported downing 181 of 207 Russian drones during the same period, acknowledging 21 direct hits at 14 locations.
Official reports from four Ukrainian regions indicated at least two fatalities and 26 injuries, including two children, within the last 24 hours.
The FP-5 Flamingo missile, with its reported 1,150kg warhead and 3,000km range, theoretically places Moscow and other major Russian cities within striking distance. Ukraine, with Western backing, continues to develop its offensive capabilities, aiming to increase the material costs for Russia and compel a negotiated settlement, a prospect Russian President Vladimir Putin has thus far dismissed.
